The self is a cluster of perceptions that’s based upon our personal experiences, fears, fantasies, aspirations, and much more. We all like to believe we have control over our sense of self, that we know who we are but the self is constantly changing and our behaviors and self-concepts are influenced heavily by interactions we have with other people. In this series of self portraits I’m exploring how the brain and body work together to alter the sense of self through the use of controlled environments, specific color schemes and prop cue’s. Each image is based loosely off of personal experiences or situations in my life. How I’ve perceived these experiences has had profound effects on how I understand myself but by manipulating the way the viewer perceives me does that make my sense of self any less rooted in reality?

This series was shown at the Seattle Gallery Mount Analogue along as The Museum of the Irrational Self. Traditionally museums are masculine, sterile environments. The Museum of the Irrational Self was not endowed with the power of reason. Museum-goers were invited to enter into various set-installations created by me and encouraged to interact with set pieces that have been taken from the photographs fictional realities.
